pwd_mkdb — install the account database

SYNOPSIS

DESCRIPTION

The pwd_mkdb utility checks file, a new account database in the master.passwd format described in passwd(5), and installs it as /etc/master.passwd with mode 0600. With -p, it also generates the public /etc/passwd, in which every password is replaced by ‘*’ and the class, change and expire fields are left out.

Unlike the other BSDs' pwd_mkdb, it writes no hashed database files: the C library reads the text files directly.

The options are as follows:

-C

Only check file; install nothing.

-d directory

Install into directory instead of /etc.

-p

Generate passwd as well.

-u user

Accepted for compatibility; the whole database is rebuilt.

The pwd_mkdb utility exits 0 on success, and >0 if an error occurs.
