reboot, halt, poweroff — stop, restart or power off the system

SYNOPSIS

DESCRIPTION

The reboot, halt and poweroff utilities restart the system, stop it, or turn the power off. They are one program; its name selects the action.

By default the request goes to init(8), which runs /etc/rc.shutdown, terminates every process, synchronizes the file systems and then carries it out. The request is a signal to process 1: SIGINT to restart, SIGUSR1 to halt, and SIGUSR2 to power off.

The options are as follows:

-l

Accepted for compatibility; there is no system log to suppress.

-n

With -q, do not synchronize the file systems first.

-p

Power off instead of restarting or halting.

-q

Do not involve init(8): synchronize the file systems and call reboot(2) at once. No services are stopped and no process is warned.

Only the superuser may use these utilities.

EXIT STATUS

The reboot utility exits 0 on success, and >0 if an error occurs. On success with -q nothing returns.

HISTORY

A reboot utility appeared in Version 6 AT&T UNIX. This implementation was written for OxideBSD.

BUGS

Until /sbin/init runs as process 1, only -q restarts or stops the system.
