ttys — terminal initialization information

DESCRIPTION

/etc/ttys lists the terminals on which init(8) runs login sessions. Each line describes one terminal with these fields, separated by blanks:

name

The terminal's device name, relative to /dev.

getty

The command init(8) runs on the terminal, normally “/usr/libexec/getty type”; the terminal's name is added as its last argument. It must be quoted if it contains blanks. none runs nothing.

type

The terminal type, set as TERM for the session.

status

on to run the command, off not to, onifexists to run it only if the device exists, or onifconsole only if the terminal is the system console.

Any further words are flags:

secure

The superuser may log in on this terminal, and single-user mode does not ask for root's password.

insecure

The opposite of secure, and the default.

window=command

A command to run before getty.

group=name

Put the terminal in a group, for use by other programs.

A ‘#’ begins a comment, which runs to the end of the line.
